Spirituality consists of discovering our inner self, the part of us which is beyond physical, mortal, or limited existence.
Although many of us discover our spiritual truth through regular meditation and spiritual training, some of us suddenly experience an awakening, whether through dreams or near-death experiences.
But have you ever thought about where is the best place to work for your spiritual growth?
Away:
Humans tend to glorify mysteries. Exploring the mysteries of distant lands has always been a dream for many. You may also be a person who feels goosebumps when you see images of exotic landscapes. Perhaps a country or a particular site attracts you too much since your childhood. Perhaps, you are a person who has always wanted to travel to new lands.
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page”
~ Augustin d’Hippone
Maybe as a child, you might have loved the fiction in which they spoke of distant lands of great wealth, beauty, and adventure. Or maybe, you liked the story of Treasure Island where the main character is stranded on the shores to discover riches in an unexplored area.
You feel that by being away from home, you are finally free from all burdens. You feel a new pleasure to lose yourself in the journey. As soon as you get down from the transport (train, plane, etc.) for a new trip, your imagination takes flight.
You feel like all of your chains have been broken. You say, “This is what my life was supposed to be.” With each new visit, you add an arc of knowledge that gives you satisfaction and a feeling of accomplishment.

Home:
But, if you feel sick in the stomach after a week’s trip, then the home may be your style. You like to express your joy with moments shared with family, friends, and partners. You feel it is not necessary to travel to find great experiences, just open your eyes to see the beautiful things happening around.
You feel deeply connected to places and people. You grow vegetables in your garden, paint your walls and spend time with your children. Home is like a getaway from the world for you.
So, as Jack Kerouac said, “I saw that my life was a large blank page and I could do whatever I wanted.” Whatever your expression of spirit is (home or away), do it.
What do you think? Do we improve spiritually at home or away?
