Om Meditation and its Benefits on the Body and the Mind

It has been said that Om meditation is a method of Hindu meditation. This meditation is actually based on the repetition of the “OM” mantra while meditating.


What does Om mean?

It is not only the sacred sound in Hinduism, it is also found in Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism.

Om is the first sound from the vibrations of the cosmic energy at the origin of the universe. It is the representation of the creator. Om is self-generated, that is to say, it is autonomous and does not need another syllable to produce its sound. When you sing properly Om the sound resonates in your body, filling it with energy and tranquility.

Om exists in everything – the words we utter, the things we use and in ourselves. Singing daily Om will give peace to your mind, body and soul.


Om meditation and how to proceed

Meditation that involves singing “Om” or ” Aum” is called Om meditation. In Om meditation, the two great spiritual possessions that belong to us – the breath and the sound – are combined to form a complete meditation technique. The use of yoga symbols will improve mediation and make it more effective.


How to perform Om meditation


1. Sitting Right


Sit in either the Lotus or Vajrasana position. If you can not sit, sit on a chair. Make sure your back is straight and relaxed and comfortable sitting. Keep your hands on your knees or your thighs. You can also keep them on your lap, one hand on the other. Empty your head and sit down peacefully.


2. Positioning of the eyes


Slowly close your eyes or glance downward.



3. Breathing pattern


Close your mouth and breathe naturally . The air must enter and exit only through the nose. Keep the jaw muscles relaxed and the upper and lower teeth slightly apart. Do not force your breath, do it naturally.



4. Singing Om


When you breathe in and out, sing “Om.” Adapt the song to the duration of your breathing. Decompose the syllable “Om” into “AAUUM”, followed by silence and vice versa. Say the first two syllables with your mouth open and the next two by pursing your lips. Place the tip of your tongue on the palate of your mouth to pronounce the last syllable. Then, immerse yourself in the silence that follows.

However, there are more complex and better “OM” mantras that we can also use. For example, we can try the OM MANI PADME OM or OM NAMAH SHIVAYA, which are very popular.



5. Combine everything


Continue the song of the Om by synchronizing it with your breath. Naturally, the song will set up and relax your mind. You can also sing “Om” mentally. Listen to the internal vibrations created in your body by singing “Om”.



6. General effect


As you deepen the meditation , the vibrations of the Om song become softer and subtle, almost like a whisper. Slowly, it will become silent and you will realize that Om has always been present and active in your body. Even your breathing will slow down and become light.

Do not focus on any part of your body. Take note of all the thoughts and feelings that occur as you meditate and treat them calmly and detached without departing from breathing and singing.

Om is not religious , but it appears as a traditional symbol and sacred sound in different religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism.


Should we be vegetarians to practice Om meditation?

The yoga philosophy follows the ahimsa principle, but it is entirely the choice of the practitioner whether to have animal products or not.


How many times a week can Om meditation be done?

Every day, if possible, and in the morning, preferably. Start with 2-3 times a week and increase gradually.


What is needed to do Om meditation?

You just need you and a carpet. With a clear and calm mind, you are good at doing Om meditation.


What to wear when meditating Om?

Wear comfortable clothes that will not distract you from meditation.
